This Week in Markets
Last week's trading delivered the clearest signal yet that the market's 2026 playbook has flipped. September's hotter-than-expected CPI print, released Wednesday, October 14, reinforced the Federal Reserve's hawkish turn from its September meeting, when the central bank raised rates a quarter point to 3.75%-4.00%, its first hike since 2023, and signaled at least one more move before year-end. Growth stocks took the brunt of the repricing: the Nasdaq-100 fell 5.52% and Information Technology (XLK) dropped 7.70%, their worst week since June, while the S&P 500 slipped 1.97%. Money rotated instead into Consumer Staples (+5.02%), Energy (+4.86%), Health Care (+3.45%) and Materials (+3.01%), sectors with steadier cash flows and less exposure to rate-sensitive growth multiples.
This week's calendar carries no major scheduled inflation data, since CPI, PPI and retail sales all landed last week, but it does carry the heaviest run of earnings so far this quarter, and the first real chance for companies to confirm or push back on last week's selloff. Wednesday is the pivot point: Meta and Tesla report alongside Lam Research, IBM and Texas Instruments, giving investors a direct read on whether AI infrastructure spending and chip demand still support current multiples. Netflix reports Tuesday, Procter & Gamble and Gilead Thursday, and Exxon Mobil closes the week Friday. With the Fed's next meeting not until October 27-28, this week's earnings, more than any data release, will decide whether last week's rotation out of tech and into defensives extends or reverses.
Defensive and value sectors extend their lead over growth
Consumer Staples, Energy, Health Care and Materials all posted their best week in months while Information Technology sank 7.70%, continuing a rotation that has been building since the Fed's hawkish September hike. The move reflects a market repricing away from long-duration growth stocks and toward businesses with steadier near-term cash flows and pricing power that can hold up even if rates stay higher for longer. This week's earnings slate offers a direct test of whether that logic holds. Philip Morris International (PM) reports Tuesday and Procter & Gamble (PG) reports Thursday, and both will show whether staples can keep passing through costs without losing volume. Energy's leadership will be judged against Exxon Mobil (XOM) and SLB (SLB), both reporting Friday, set against a crude market that is up 4.5% for the week but still down over the past month, a reminder that the rotation is as much about rate sensitivity as it is about commodity fundamentals.
Mega-cap tech faces an earnings reckoning after the AI selloff
Information Technology's 7.70% weekly loss was the sector's worst showing since June, driven by a repricing of AI-linked growth stocks after a hot September CPI report reinforced the Fed's hawkish stance. This week's earnings turn that repricing into a direct test. Meta Platforms (META) and Tesla (TSLA) both report Wednesday, each facing scrutiny over capital spending and demand durability in categories, AI infrastructure and EV production, that carried much of the market's recent growth premium. Netflix (NFLX) reports Tuesday with a read on consumer discretionary spending, while semiconductor names reporting midweek add a chip-demand signal to the mix. Our catalyst radar flagged unusually heavy options activity in Nvidia (NVDA) heading into this earnings run, alongside elevated disclosed-purchase-watchlist and congressional-trade attention clustered around the same mega-cap names, a sign that positioning in the AI trade stayed crowded even as the sector corrected.
Health care's quiet strength faces a biotech catalyst test
Health Care (XLV) was last week's second-best sector, up 3.45%, benefiting from the same flight to steadier cash flows that lifted staples and from relative insulation from the AI-capex scrutiny hitting tech. Gilead Sciences (GILD) reports Thursday, giving the sector a fundamental earnings test. Alongside it, our catalyst radar is tracking a cluster of binary readouts: BioNTech (BNTX) has three Phase 3 results flagged this week, covering pumitamig in first-line triple-negative breast cancer, gotistobart in second-line-plus squamous non-small-cell lung cancer, and BNT113 in HPV16-positive head and neck cancer. Moderna (MRNA) is also on the radar, both for continued congressional trading activity and for its registrational mRNA-3927 study in propionic acidemia. None of these readouts carry a confirmed date, so the risk is asymmetric and binary in a way ordinary earnings are not. For a sector that has outperformed on defensiveness, this week tests whether it can also deliver company-specific upside rather than simply benefiting from money leaving tech.
The Week Ahead
This week carries no major scheduled inflation data; September's CPI, PPI and retail sales reports already landed last week, and the Fed's next meeting isn't until October 27-28. Instead, the catalyst is earnings. Monday brings GE Aerospace and Fifth Third Bancorp. Tuesday is heavier: Netflix, Philip Morris International, RTX and Capital One Financial all report. Wednesday is the biggest day of the week by market value, with Meta Platforms, Tesla, IBM, Texas Instruments and Lam Research all reporting, the clearest test yet of whether AI and chip demand still support current valuations. Thursday brings Procter & Gamble, Honeywell International, Union Pacific, Lockheed Martin and Gilead Sciences. Friday closes the week with Exxon Mobil, American Express and SLB, rounding out a read on energy and consumer credit heading into the final full week of October.
